When it comes to your wedding, there are lots of ways to save money. One of the ways you can save is by doing lots of DIY. Making lots of the items for your wedding yourself also means that they can be more personal and exactly fit the theme of your wedding. Lots of people decide to make their own wedding stationery such as invites, place cards, table numbers, seating plans and the order of service.
Making your own wedding stationery may seem like a daunting task but it’s actually pretty easy to do. The first thing you’ll need to do is choose a theme and colour scheme that fits in with the rest of your big day. Once you have this in place you can start the design process.
Overall design tips
There are few things to remember when designing stationery of any kind, here are my tips:
- Keep it simple. Less is definitely more so choose one or two colours and stick to them. Keep complicated or busy images to a minimum. Silhouetted images and outlines work well on wedding invites.
- Make sure it’s easy to read – while script fonts look lovely, they can be difficult to decipher if you don’t already know what they say. If you’re unsure, ask a friend or family member to read over it for you.
- Use a font matcher to help you find fonts that go together.
- Keep information short and sweet. For example, with a wedding invite add the key details and then use a wedding website for all the other information such as accommodation and travel advice.
Choose the right images
If you are doing your own stationery for your wedding, then choosing the right images is essential.
For example, a butterfly svg pack would be ideal for a wedding. The one pictured above has muted pastel colours are very weddingy and you could use the pink butterfly monograms for the ladies and the blue butterfly monograms for the gents (included in the pack just not pictured!) for table name place cards.
SVG files are perfect for designing stationery as they can easily be resized to fit whatever it is that you’re working on without the quality of the image being affected. Plus you only pay once for unlimited downloads so you could even use them for other projects later along the line such as designing thank you cards after your wedding or making a wedding scrapbook.
Printing Vs Stamping Vs Writing
One thing I did for my own wedding was hand stamp all of my place name cards. I loved how these looked but it was a very time-consuming process which thankfully my bridesmaids really helped me with. Printing out the names or even writing them neatly would probably have been much easier.
Anything that has a lot of information on, such as invites, menus or order of service is best being printed. If you’re just adding a single name or number then hand-stamping or writing does look really nice. Both stamping sets and calligraphy pens can be bought relatively cheaply and can, of course, be used for other projects after your wedding.
Advice for taking on lots of DIY projects for your wedding
While I’m all for taking on lots of projects for your wedding, it’s important not to take on too many. You could well get stressed and bored and then you might end up buying the end product as well as already having spent money on DIY materials.
That’s definitely what happened with my own wedding. Our venue was amazing but they didn’t supply anything at all and we just decided to do everything ourselves rather than hiring professionals. Some things went really like our Harry Potter Sweet table, bar snacks instead of canapes and decorating the dining room including my own seating charts and table names which I designed and printed at home.
Other things that didn’t go so well included our DIY bar and catering the wedding breakfast ourselves.
Here are some tips to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.
- Choose your DIY projects carefully. Pick things you’ll enjoy doing or you think you’ll enjoy learning and then leave skills that you’re not so strong on to the professionals.
- Ask friends and family for help. They may have some amazing skills you weren’t aware of.
- Do a price comparison to make sure the cost and time of the DIY project doesn’t massively exceed just buying it in the first place
- Don’t leave everything until the last minute. Time flies. As soon as you have confirmed the date and guest numbers or start getting RSVPs you make a start on DIY projects. You will thank yourself later in the run-up to the wedding!
